The Day of Surgery
The day of your surgical procedure is a very exciting time, and it’s also normal to have some degree of nervousness. Our goal is to provide you with all of the information that you need to make this day as pleasant and stress-free as possible. You should expect to be at the clinic for approximately 1 ½ – 2 hours. You will need a driver to take you home after your procedure. Please eat a light meal prior to your arrival and wear comfortable clothing. We ask that you do not wear any strongly scented perfumes, lotions, or colognes as that can negatively affect the laser. Please do remove any eye make-up prior to your arrival. When you arrive at the clinic you will check in at the reception desk where you will be walked through your paper work.
Once you are brought back to the preoperative and postoperative area you will be offered a mild relaxant and any remaining confirmatory testing will be performed. Two different doctors will be with you during your day of surgery. One doctor will guide you through the basic preoperative instructions, and then go over your postoperative instructions following surgery. You will meet your surgeon prior to your procedure. He will evaluate your eyes and review your clinical data. He will explain the procedure and answer any remaining questions.
You will then go into our surgery suite to have your procedure. Typically you are in the surgery suite for 10-15 minutes. There is a viewing area for family and friends to watch your procedure if they would like to. After your procedure we take you back to our comfortable chairs in the postoperative area to relax for a few minutes. Once we are sure that you are doing well and are ready to be discharged we will review your postoperative instructions and then you will be ready to go home. You should plan on taking a nap after surgery, and then relaxing the rest of the day. You will need to be seen the day after surgery either at our clinic or at the office of your comanaging doctor. Most LASIK patients are comfortable driving themselves to this day 1 visit.
